Lacking the support systems available in years to com, Emma quickly remarried Frederick Miller, a widower with four children. They lived with their children at Muloowurtie. They also had two daughters of their own: Emma Jane and Edith Ellen.

Arthur's brother George Edward Buttfield and his wife Blanche raised three of Emma's children, Mabel, Alice and Gilbert.
