Biographical Notes |
Note: In the 1871 census, we find George at three years, not at home with his family, but with his aunt Sarah Buttfield Carey's family in Hackney. Perhaps his mother was ill. In 1881, George 13 is a scholar at Oxford. The school's name appears to be Oakley House School whose head was William Watson 60.
In 1891 George 23 had left Oxford to go to Lancashire, where he lived in the South Manchester district. He lodged in the home of Lydia Frost 55, a widow, whose household included her two children, three lodgers and one servant. George's occupation was civil engineer (mechanical). His place of birth was Upper Tooting, Surrey which is later referred to as Balham, Surrey, or Balham, London (Middlesex).
Ten years later, George 32 is still in South Manchester, Lancashire.
