At the time of her death, she had suffered through the deaths of a child in 1847, two babies in 1855, a son in 1863 and a grown son Anda in 1864, as a result of the Civil War. I wonder if she died of a broken heart.
Note: From Hardesty's History of Gallia County, Ohio, we learn that Harrison Fowler was born in Kanawha county, West Virginia, June 8, 1812, [Virginia then] and came to Gallia County with his parents in 1815. His parents were Elijah and Jane (Bogan) Fowler. When they settled in Gallia county it was in a very wild state; no roads, mills, or any conveniences. His father taught school, and was the first justice of the peace elected in Guyan township. Harrison Fowler, by hard work and careful management, has obtained a large farm, located in Guyan township, which is in first-class condition.
He was married in this county, October 10, 1840, to Aromenta Mart, who was born in Giles county, Virginia, June 16, 1818; her death took place in December 1863. Her parents were Nathaniel and Lydia Mart, settlers of this county in 1825. The children of Mr. Fowler are: 1. Anda L. b. Oct. 7, 1841; d. Jan. 1864 2. William F. b. May 13, 1843, d. Sept 1863 3. Mr. Fowler's father was born March 25, 1770. The subject of this sketch has held the office of justice of the peace for many years. Mr. Fowler had two sons who lost their lives in the late war; Anda Lewis served six months, and died of typhoid fever in Tennessee; William served two years and six months, and died from disease brought on by hardships endured in the Lynchburg raid. Mr. Fowler's postoffice address is Crown City, Gallia county, Ohio.
In the 1860 federal census, Harrison 48 and Arominta 42 have the following children at home: Louis 18, a farm laborer, who owned property worth $1350.00 and personal estate worth $2200; Willliam 17, Mary 15, Elijah 13, Henry 11, Lydia nine and Charles six.
Arominta died a few years later, but Harrison stayed on the farm and kept working. The 1880 census finds him 68 yrs at home with sons James H. 20 and John R. 18. There are two housekeepers to look after them.
Note: Harrison's tombstone says that he died Jan. 25, 1887, age 74y 7n 17d. In the death records of Gallia county the date given is Jan. 2, 1886 and age 75 yrs. It says that he died in West Virginia.
