Note: In the 1871 English census, Alfred Carey 19 years was living at home, 15 Clapton Square in Hackney, with his parents, Sarah and Jonathan Carey, three of his brothers and sister Blanche. His father, 73 years old, was a retired solicitor. Young Alfred himself was a civil engineer. Ten years later in 1881, Alfred was 29 and a civil engineer. His father had died in 1874, and his mother was 59 years old.
Of the many descendants of Dr. Carey, one great grandson is now an ordained missionary in Bengal, another a medical missionary in Delhi, and a third is a member of the Bombay Civil Service, who has distinguished himself by travels in Northern Tibet and Chinese Turkestan, which promise to unveil the last of the unexplored regions of Asia to the scholar and the missionary." The third was Alfred's brother Arthur Carey.
Written in the margins in pencil: "Alfred Carey deceased late of Kent House Addiscombe Surrey. F.R. G. S. etc. Engineer & Author" It also says, "Francis Carey who is now residing in the south of France"
Alfred died at the Wray Lodge in Reigate, Surrey, on 30 December 1923 of prostatic enlargement and heart failure. He was 71 years old.
