Biographical Notes |
Note: On Francis James' birth certificate Jonathan Carey's occupation is "Gentleman" and his residence is Abbey Place in Marylebone. The 1871 English census report gives as his place of birth St John's Wood. It could be that they were one and the same in 1846. In 1861 Francis 14 years was in Coomb, Hampshire with his mother Sarah and siblings Arthur and Emma. They were visitors in the home of farmer Thomas Challis and his wife Charlotte. Thomas farmed 66 acres of land.
Francis became a surgeon, who at one time worked from the family home, Kent House, on Addiscombe Road in Croydon, Surrey.
On his death certificate, the informant was Henry Laney(?), who was present at the death at Holloway Sanatorium, St Ann's Heath, Virginia Water, Surrey.
Francis died of cancer of the liver and rectum and peritonitis in 1901. He undoubtedly suffered greatly. I hope that he was given morphine.
Francis's will was administered by his brother Alfred, Civil Engineer. Francis's estate amounted to £1,442/18/6.
