Note: Sarah Buttfield was baptized on 21 February 1842 and joined the Particular Baptists at the Baptist chapel at Boxmoor near Hemel Hempstead. In 1850 she transferred to Bloomsbury Baptist Church in London.
Note: Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Hemel Hempstead in the County of Hertfordshire.
No. 146 November 6 1843. Jonathan Carey & Sarah Buttfield of full age Widower/Spinster Rank: Gentleman Residence at Time of Marriage: Hemel Hempstead for both Father's Name and Surname: William Carey Professor of Oriental Languages and William Buttfield, Gentleman.
This Marriage was solemnized between us. J. Carey and Sarah Buttfield in the Presence of us, William Buttfield, Annie Turner, Mary Turner, James G[utteridge] Buttfield.
Note: Sarah's will was probated on 13 March 1891 by Frederick George Carey, Barrister, son, and Emma Blanche, daughter, both of Kent House, executors. Sarah's assets were £479.
Note: When Sarah and Jonathan Carey moved from Hemel Hempstead to London in 1850, Sarah transferred her church membership from Boxmoor to Bloomsbury Chapel [Bloomsbury Baptist Church]. She and Jonathan were married in an Anglican Church, which was compulsory in that time. Jonathan was buried at Abney Park Cemetery which was not far from their home in Hackney. Sarah died years later and in a different area, so she is buried elsewhere.
Note: Sarah Carey, 59, head of household, had four of her five children at home: Francis James 36, a Surgeon MRCS MA; Emma Blanche 32; Frederick George 31, Barrister Law practising; and Alfred Edward 29, Civil Engineer A.M. LLB London. Alfred was born in Wargrave, Berkshire.
Sarah had died before the 1891 census, but her children remained in the family home at 79 Addiscombe Road, East Croydon.
Note: Sarah Buttfield Carey occupied Kent House at 79 Addiscombe Road, Addiscombe [now Croydon?] from 1889-90, the year before she died; thereafter it was owned by her daughter Emma Carey from 1890 to 1922. By 2002 the site of Kent House was occupied by a block of flats and had been renumbered. Adjacent surviving houses are large, detached and double-fronted. It is likely that Kent House was identical.
