Note: Buster's father, Silas V. was 41 yrs and rented a house for $65 per month. His work was "management receivership." He and Virginia, 39, had three children, Alexander 14, Billie Jean 7 and Silas V. (Jr.) three years. Alexander was born in West Virginia, but Billie Jean and Silas V. "Buster" were both born in California. Also living in the Phelps household were Virginia's mother, Mary E. Cook 75 yrs, and Silas' sister-in-law Mary Weaver 32, who had been born in Iowa.
Note: To Willie and Miles Brown from Buster Phelps
On the card there is a handwritten message from Buster which reads, "[Seasons' Greetings] sounds kinda stiff and formal for cousin Willie & cousin Miles, doesn't it? But I couldn't find a card that said anything at all about hospitality, and beautiful roses, and devil's cake. "Thanks" seems so inadequate, and "love," maybe a little gooey. I guess there just aren't words for folks like you. "Return" might suffice inasmuch as that's what I hope to do, at the earliest possible date, if you please!Affectionately, Buster Phelps P.S. Cousin Willie, the entire town of Hollywood knows about your fabulous cake--& although she's tried, Mom's isn't quite the same. B
Willie and Miles Brown were Buster's first cousins, once removed. Miles was his mother Virginia's first cousin. Virginia's mother Mary and Miles' mother Miriam or Mide Alexander were sisters.

Note: Mary Alexander Cook had a daughter Virginia Cook Phelps, who lived in Parkersburg before moving to California. Virginia Phelps' son was "Buster" Phelps. We have photos of him. His real name was Silas Vernon Phelps, Jr. No wonder they called him Buster! Buster was one of a long line of Silas Phelps.
