1900: William 48 was farming, and Sarah 45 was keeping house for a family of three: Effie E. 22, Edmund E. 17 and Lula M. eight. Lula was the first child to be born in West Virginia, which suggests that the family moved about 1891.
1910: Will 58 and Sarah 54 had been married for thirty-six years. They had had six children of whom five were living. At home were two daughters, Effie 32 and Lola 18.
1920: The Gothards owned their home freehold. Will was now 68 and Sarah 64. Living at home with them were two daughters: Effie 42 and Lollie 28. Son Calvin 45 and his wife Bertha 44 were farming nearby. They had a family of six children at home.
