Biographical Notes |
Note: In 1860 Robert, one year old, was living in Pomeroy, Ohio with his father Robert Greenwood and mother Susanna Dixon Heslop. He had a sister Sarah who was nine, and brothers John, Charles and "Thomas" (Thayer). Ten years later the Heslops had moved across the Ohio River from Meigs Co., Ohio, to Mason Co., West Virginia. They were living in Hartford City, where Robert's father was a cabinetmaker.
On the 15th of June 1900, the time of the US federal census, Robert and Eleanor Heslop were 41 years and 34 years respectively. Robert's occupation was undertaker. As we know, carpentry and undertaking went hand in hand in those days.
They had three young children: Wilber ten, Earl nine and Esther two years.
Eleanor's parents were living with them, Frederick and Jane E. Beymer [or Bergmer], who were both born in West Virginia.
In 1910 Eleanor's parents have either died or moved on, but they are not in the household. Robert 50 years is an undertaker, while Eleanor 43 has four children at home. They have been married for twenty-two years and have had five children of whom four are living. They are Wilber 20, Earl 19, Esther 12 and Russell nine.
By the 1930 census Eleanor and Robert Heslop are still in Martins Ferry. Robert is 71 years and Eleanor 63.
At the time of their marriage Robert was 30 and Eleanor was 22 years old.
Living at home with them is their daughter Virginia, who is 19 years and single.
Robert's occupation is merchant in the undertaking and furnishings business.
