Note: Young Humphry was six years old and a scholar in the 1871 English census. His father Humphry, a cordwainer, aged 27and his mother Mary 24 lived at 42 Higherend in Marhamchurch next door to grandfather Humphry Skitch and grandmother Elizabeth Fanson Skitch, who were at 41 Higherend. His uncle John Skitch, also a cordwainer, also lived next door. Ten years later Humphry was 17 years old and an apprentice mason in St Jenny's, Cornwall, where his family had lived for a few years. He was boarding with a master mason, Joseph Davey and his wife Sussanah.
