Biographical Notes |
Note: At the time of the 1850 federal census, the Samuel Sanders family was living in Harrison township in Gallia county where Samuel, 34 years, was a farm laborer. His wife Elizabeth, 30 years, had three children at home: Jane ten, Mary seven and Nancy four years. In 1860 Samuel, 44 years, and wife Elizabeth, 30 [actually 40] years, were farming in nearby Mason township in Lawrence county, Ohio. The children were Sarah J. 17, Mary A. 15, Nancy 12, John nine, Melissa seven and Jacob five.
In 1870 Samuel 54 years and Elizabeth 49 years were in Guyan township in Gallia county. Samuel owned personal estate worth $350.00, but didn't own any real estate. They must have rented or leased their farm. Samuel couldn't read or write; Elizabeth could read but not write.
Their children in July 1870 were Sarah 27, Mary 25, Nancy 21 (all of whom could read but not write), John 19, Melissa 16, Jacob 14, Eliza 11 and Emery two years old. The younger children have learned how to read and write, probably in a little one-room school.
