Death | 7 May 1887 (Age 5) Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio, USA
Cause of death: Burns
Note: A Sad AccidentLittle Katie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Morgan of South street, who was so severely scalded last Friday morning, died last Saturday night at twelve o'clock. The funeral services were held at the house on Monday, conducted by Rev. Redford. Internment at Mason city, West Virginia. Katie was born Nov. 30, 1881, and was about five and a half years of age at the time of her death. She was the youngest of three children, and was an only daughter. The accident was unavoidable and was as follows: Mrs. Morgan was preparing some water to do some scrubbing, and had set the bucket about half full of boiling water down, and left it to procure a broom. Katie, who was near, became frightened at a bee that was hovering about, and which she was trying to avoid, and walking backwards, set herself into the bucket of water. In falling she overturned the vessel, causing the hot water to run out and over her. Her most serious injuries were about the small of her back. Her sufferings were intense, but she bore them heroically until death claimed her for his own. All was done that could be done to alleviate her agony by her mother and father and friends, and her short stay after the dreadful catastrophe was made as pleasant as loving hands and anxious hearts could do. Little Katie was a bright and beautiful child, kind and indulgent. She was the pet of the neighborhood and a welcome visitor to all the neighbors. She was the very picture of health, and gave promise of a long and useful life. Katie was a very sensible child, and her conversation and manners filled one with admiration. Her deportment was of the best, no jars with her little playmates was ever of her making; she was always willing to give way to others. This is indeed a sad affliction to Mr. and Mrs. Morgan to lose one who gave to them such bright promise of useful womanhood, but "The fairest flower is usually the first one plucked," and we can but add that nevermore will little Katie greet them, but they can re-unite the family in the unseen world, where Katie is to-day one of its brightest angels, ministering unto Him, who said, "Suffer little children to come unto me." The sympathy of all go out to them in this their hour of affliction, and many were the tears of condolence shed over the untimely taking off of one so young and beautiful.
