Biographical Notes |
Note: Rosa was born on 10 December 1877 at Kadina, South Austrlia, and came to Western Australia by ship in 1886 with her parents, Charles and Sarah Simms Davis, brothers Horace, Charles "Tom", and George, and her only sister Ardrossan Hall Davis... Rosa Mary's father died in the late 1890s while gold prospecting at Cobra Station near Mt. Augustus, Western Australia, where he is buried.
Her mother, Sarah Davis, ran hotels in Derby and Day Dawn...It was at Day Dawn (near Meekatharra) that a young English man found work and boarded at their hotel. His name was Clement Harrington Glover Wood, aged 18 years.
Later, Mrs. Davis with Rosa and Ardrossan, who was called Dross, moved south. They built a small hotel at Barton, a siding on the Great Southern Railway. This hotel was opened in 1906.
Clement H.G. Wood had taken up land 20 miles east of Barton. Norman Harvey fell in love with Rosa, and Clem Wood asked Dross to marry him. So a double wedding resulted on 28 April 1910 in Barton Hall, and the reception was held at the hotel.
Seven children were born to Rosa and Norman Harvey during the fourteen years of their happy marriage. "The more the merrier!", Rosa used to say.
Sadly, Rosa died, aged 46, in 1924, leaving Norman with seven young children.
