The short-tailed shearwater spends most of the year migrating aroung the north Pacific Ocean feeding off small marine life. Its airborne agility is beautiful to watch. They nest on islands in the south Pacific around Tasmania and New Zealand. On land they are very ungainly and were easy prey for sailors and sealers. The name given to them in those parts was mutton bird.
