Biographical Notes

Note: George suffered from greed, alcoholism, and from Emily of whom he was afraid, and Rosa said because "she had such a temper, it was vile". At one time he was Secretary to Lord Beaucamp who became a Governor of New South Wales. He was a spendthrift and extravagant and always looking for ways to obtain money. He persuaded his father to add a codicil to his will leaving him the family home outright and much more than a fair share of cash. His health broke down in 1897 and he took a sea voyage to South Australia to improve it. He stayed with the Charles Lakemans. He went back in 1898 and a few weeks later died suddenly at his home 71 Hampton Road, Forest Gate, Essex. He was aged 48 and was buried in the family plot at Hendon Churchyard.
