Note: Robert Alexander, born in Cunningham Manor County, Donegal, Ireland. Master's of arts, Trinity College, Dublin. Came to Augusta County, Virginia in 1743. He established in 1748 "the first classical school west of the Blue Ridge" the beginning of Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. A marble memorial is on the wall, as one of the founders, in the college chapel.

Hide Details Note: Alexander Alexander had a son Andrew Alexander Brown of Monstry ‎(1544)‎ whose son Alexander Alexander, Baron of Menstry died about 1565. His wife was Elizabeth Forbes. His son was Alexander, who had two sons, Alexander, Baron of Menstry, who was the father of William Alexander, Earl of Sterling, and Thomas Alexander, born in Scotland.

In 1630 ‎[Thomas?]‎ removed to Ireland. In 1735 Archibald Alexander and Elizabeth ‎(born in Ireland)‎ went to Pennsylvania. In 1736 they went to Augusta ‎(?)‎ Co. Virginia. In 1747 they settled in Timber Ridge.

Archibald was president of Hampden Siday College and founder of 1812 Princeton Seminary. ‎[Augusta County, Virginia, started as Orange County & included what is now West Virginia, Kentucky and western Virginia. Orange County was then divided into Orange & Augusta Counties.]‎
