Wages Dec. 21 M. L. Brown, $12.00 [Martin L. Brown, son of Major & Salina] M. D. Brown, $12.00 [Mathew D. Brown, son of Major & Salina] [H. W. Alexander was part of the crew. Harry was a brother of Miriam Alexander who married Mathew D. Brown.]
Note: 1880: Harry was at home on the farm with his mother Jane and brother George. He worked on a boat. Perhaps it was the "Hummingbird" riverboat. From an old log boat, we know that in 1878 he was in Augusta, Kentucky, helping with the "Hummingbird".
1910: H.M. was 64 years old and a general farmer. His wife Elizabeth was 60; and their daughter Gladys was 22 and single (born Ohio). Gladys was a school teacher.
1920: H.M. Alexander, 73, born Ohio (as were his parents) and Elizabeth Alexander, 69, born in West Virginia (as were her parents). He was a general farmer.
(There are many inconsistencies amongst the census records but these snapshots, brief and flawed as they are, build an interesting picture of life's journey over the decades.)
