There are five children in the household: William ten, George eight, John five, Samuel three and Elizabeth a baby of seven months. Perhaps Mary was a sister. In the 1851 census of Clifton, Nottinghamshire, we find John Brooks, Jr. 45, a shoemaker, and his wife Elizabeth 40 living with John's widowed father John Brooks, who was also a shoemaker. John, Jr and Elizabeth have the following children: William 20 ‎(shoemaker)‎, Elizabeth ten and Samuel twelve. Samuel is a "farmer's boy in husbandry." Three generations of shoemakers!
