TO MRS. SELINA GUTHRIE

I know that your heart is now filled with grief,
And your home is now filled with gloom,
For the one that you all so fondly loved
Now sleeps in the silent tomb.

He has passed through many and many a day
Of sickness, of sorrow and pain.
But the Lord has taken him home to rest,
And he never will suffer again.

In the summer of life he was taken away,
Its autumn he never will know.
Much less the cold chill of the winter time,
With its frosts, its storms and its snow.

The tears from his bright and beaming eyes
No more will be called to start
When the tale of the suffering needy poor
Has melted his tender heart.

No more will you listen to his pleasant voice,
And his bright face no more will you see,
And never again will you have the sweet kiss
That he often has given to thee.

The dear previous children how sadly they feel,
They scarcely know what to do:
Remember the things your father has said,
And do what he wished you to do.

His body now rests in the silent grave,
But his spirit has gone to its God,
Now may this thought help you to brighten the cloud
And bow to the chastening rod.

In his heavenly home by the Savior's side,
With the happy, the hold and true,
With a crown on his head and sweet songs of his lip
He is waiting and watching for you.
