Hide Details Note: 2 April 1872:
"This Endenture witnesseth, That Robert George Bairstow of Mount Barker Springs in the Province of South Australia, hath put himself, and by these presents doth voluntarily, and of his own free will and accord put himself Apprentice to David Chapman of Mount Barker Springs and Callington to learn his art, trade, or mystery, and after the manner of an Apprentice to serve him from the day of date hereof, for...five full years next ensuing James Pearce Guardian of the said Robert George Bairstow...." ‎[Robert George was born the year that his father died. Evidently his uncle James Pearce had become his guardian rather than his stepfather Mr Edwards.]‎

Included in the agreement were these terms--that Robert G. Bairstow must not do damage to his Master, shall not commit fornication nor contract matriomony, nor play cards, dice or any unlawful game. "...he shall not absent himself day or night from his said Master's service without his leave, nor haunt ale-houses, taverns and play-houses..." The professions to which George was indentured were wheelwright and carpenter.

On the side of the indenture form, written in David Chapman's own hand:
"I the undersigned hereby certify that Robert George Bairstow, has faithfully fulfilled his duties to me as an Apprentice. And I can recommend him as an honest and trustwrothy young man possesing strictly sober habits, and character of high repute."
