Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: George Chapman and his brother Albert Moulton Chapman established the Chapman Smallgood's Factory at Nairne in 1899, which specialised in curing bacon.

"On Monday, a Mr Geo. Chapman was loading hay in Mr Jaensch's paddock when the horses attached to the trolley were startled. Mr Chapman made a spring for the reins on the sea, which turned turtle and landed him between the horses. He was badly cut about the head and body, and Dr Chapple had to put several stitches in his head. It will be some days before he will be able to get about again."

July 1909
Nairne 21 July
"As Mr George Chapman was stepping down from the verandah at the post-office he fell and broke his leg at the thigh. Mrs Chapman ‎(Emily King Chapman)‎, who was with him, quickly summoned assistance, and Dr Smeaton of Mount Barker was called and set the broke limb. On Saturday a lady fell from the same verandah, which is about 18 in. high, but fortunately she was not hurt. A lighted lamp would be a great convenience to those who find it necessary to go to the post-office at night and might prevent further accidents."

Besides the fractured thigh in July 1909, George suffered other illnesses which were documented in the Sick Ledger Book ‎[of the Loyal Flinders Lodge from 4 Apri 1865 IOOF, Nairne Institute, Nairne, South Australia]‎.
17 July to 24 July 1886 ‎(1 week, 1 day)‎-- had an injury to the sole of his foot.
7 Aug to 12 Aug 1886 ‎(5 days duration)‎-- an inflamed upper jaw
In 1888 George had a sprained ankle for 1 week, 1 day.
From 11 Nov to 29 Nov 1890 there was another injury to the foot ‎(2 weeks, 5 days)‎
The final entry was for hepatitis 21 August and died 16 September 1912 ‎(duration 3 weeks, 5 days)‎.

George was admitted to Ru Rua Hospital, Adelaide, for an operation and found to have an inoperable cancer of the stomach and liver.

In his obituary in the Mt Barker Courier on 20 September 1912, it mentions that George was a member of the Nairne District Council and headed the large bacon curing business bearing his name.
