Before his marriage to Ellen, William 15 years was a lodger in the home of Thomas Smith and his family in Wortley Road, Mortomley, which is close to High Green. He was an apprentice miner who had been born in Derby.

After migrating to Australia the family spent a few months in Melbourne before moving to Adelaide and settling in Semaphore, South Australia.

After emigrating to Australia he worked as a carpenter and foreman for the timber merchants, Walter and Morris.

William died of complications of diabetes mellitus, cardiac failure and arthritis.

William Walker is buried at Cheltenham Cemetery: 124-C Path 4 Sec. M Gate 26, next to his son Gilbert and grandson Ronald Shepherd.
