Biographical Notes	Note: William was a miller as was his father, Thomas Caffyn, and his father-in-law, John Shepherd. William's first wife, Mary Anne Shepherd, did not like the name William. ‎[See the letter which Mary Anne wrote to her sister Emilie.]‎ Mary Anne died in September 1869 at Ashurst Mill. At some stage the Shepherds lost touch with Will but it appears that he returned to Australia after Mary Anne died and married Elizabeth Jane Potts in 1872 in Queensland. Six children were born of this second marriage in NSW and Queensland. Will's brother Thomas named a baby for Will. The baby was baptised on 28 September 1879, William Samuel Caffyn.

Death of spouse	In the family bible we see that "Mary Ann Caffyn-daughter to John & Harriett Shepherd died September 21st 1869 Ashurst Mill, Kent England ‎(near Tunbridge Wells)‎.
