In the 1870 census William was 86 years old. It stated that he had been born in Western Virginia. The state of West Virginia did not exist until after the Civil War.

At the time of the 1900 federal census Brice and Samantha were farming in Guyan township with no children at home! Quite often large farming families had a child or two at home until the parents died - or so it seems.

They had been married for 45 years and would live to see their 50th.

Mr. Sheets was a soldier in the war of the rebellion. He enlisted February 14, 1865 in the 195th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and received his discharge July 6, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland. ‎[Length of service: 4m 22d Address: Mercerville]‎ His brother William J. Sheets, was in the same regiment, and served till December same year. His brother, George W., served in the 173d Ohio Volunteer Infantry one year. ‎[Brice was 30 years old.]‎

Mr. Sheets is a farmer, residing in Guyan township. His postoffice address is Mercerville, Gallia county, Ohio.

Died Last Thursday.

Thursday night, Brice H. Sheets of near Yoho died from an attack of heart failure in his 70th year. He had been affected with heart trouble for some years & his death was not unexpected. Until a week ago, he had been a resident of this city for two years. Mr. Sheets formerly owned a large farm, which he divided among his children upon moving to this city & he was quite well to do, having been a man of great energy. He was a soldier in the Civil War & a member of the Missionary Baptist church. He is survived by his wife & four sons & four daughters, Rev. Ira J. of Guyan, Elza S., of this city, Alphonso of Guyan, Silas of Huntington, Mrs. Ellsworth Hineman, Mrs. Chas. Bevan & Mrs. J. H. Hineman of Crown City & Miss Etta at home. Also by one brother, W.J. Sheets.
The funeral services were held at the Mercerville Baptist Church at 10 A.M., Sunday, conducted by Rev. N. B. Burnett. Burial at the church cememtery, by Undertaker Stevers.
