It seems more likely that, for a period after he was married, he lived in Tenterden, Kent which is less than 10 miles from Rye where he grew up. There are a number of records of Lavance descendants in this area at this time. "Tenterfield", Scotland, on the other hand, was reputedly the property of two maiden aunts of Sir Stuart Donaldson, a future state premier of NSW who apparently suggested the name for Tenterfield, NSW. Richard's daughter Emma married a Scot and perhaps this contributed to the confusion.
