Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: Charles Johnston Whillas was born in Adelaide, but later his father and mother moved to Melbourne where his father had been sent by his employers Sands & McDougal, to take up a position. Until he was six, the family remained in Melbourne living first in Calton and then in St Kilda. In 1878 the family ‎(now consisting of three children)‎, moved back to Adelaide where John Foggo Whillas established "Whillas & Ormiston". Charles lived with his parents, brothers and sister at "Dumbi Dykes" the house in Woodville which was to be their home for many years.

He was educated at the local school until he won a scholarship to Whinham College.

He was indentured for 6 years as a compositor with Whillas & Ormiston, signing up on 6 Sep 1886.

In 1907 Charles married Charlotte ‎(Lottie)‎ Sloggett the eldest in a family of eight girls. Charles was a quiet gentleman and a great reader. He found time however to involve himself in many activities. He played bowls for Woodville, was a member of TOCH, Chairman of the Woodville School Committee and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
