His father Humphry, a cordwainer, aged 27and his mother Mary 24 lived at 42 Higherend in Marhamchurch next door to grandfather Humphry Skitch and grandmother Elizabeth Fanson Skitch, who were at 41 Higherend. His uncle John Skitch, also a cordwainer, also lived next door. William had an older brother Humphrey six and sister Mary five and a baby sister Elizabeth A. who was one year old. When he was 13 years old, William Skitch was working as an indoors servant in the home of Mary and Thomas Marks in Poundstock.
