Hide Details Note: In 1841 Charles and Rachel Cain lived in Horsham, Sussex, where Charles 44 years was a brewer. His wife Rachel 42 years had three chiildren: Charles 13, Emma 11 and John nine years.

In 1851 they were living in Amersham, Buckinghamshire at 39 High Street. Charles, now 57 years, was a brewer who was born in Hartley Rasper, Hampshire. Rachel 55 years was born in Chelsea, Middlesex ‎(now London)‎. All three children were at home: Charles 23, a brewer; Emma 21; and John 19.

In 1861 the family had two very significant differences: Rachel had died; and son Charles' little daughter Emma Elizabeth Cane, three years old, was a permanent member of the family. Emma's mother, Elizabeth Shepherd Cane, died in Amersham in January 1860 during a visit from Australia. Charles, Emma's father, eventually went back to Adelaide on his own,cleaving his sister Emma and father to care for his daughter.

By 1861 Aunt Emma Cane had married Jacob Davies, a retired grocer; and they were living in Reading with young Emma, a scholar, and grandfather/father-in-law Charles Cane Sr, 77, a retired brewer.

By 1881 Charles Sr had died.
