Hide Details Note: 1851: Joseph Jr. was living at home with his parents and some of his siblings in High Green-Mortomley. He was 21 years old and a coal miner. His next older brother Thomas was living next door with his wife Sarah and their baby, Elizabeth.

By 1861 Joseph Briggs 31 years had married Mary 28 years, and they had had three children, Andrew ten, Margaret two and John one. With an eight year gap, they may have had other children between Andrew and Margaret. Joseph's niece Alice West, 12 years old, was living with them, designated "servant." Henry Bellamy, coal miner's apprentice was also in the household.

1871: Their address was 33 High Green. Joseph 40 years was born in High Green, but Mary said, "Mortomley." All of the children were born in High Green. They were Andrew 20, Margaret 12, John 11, Amelia nine, Sarah eight, Josh six, Elizabeth two and Anne one. They had a lodger named Walter West who was 27 and single. He may have been related to them.

1881: They lived at "Briggs House" with seven children: Sarah, Margaret, Joseph, John, Ellen, Annie and Albert.
