Biographical Notes

Hide Details Note: What caused Charles Kerr to emigrate to South Australia is not known with certainty as several versions have been given by various branches of the family. He travelled by the "Joseph Rowan", 935 tons, Captain McKie, as a cabin ‎(first class)‎ passenger and arrived on 16 Jun 1854 having left Liverpool on 21 Mar 1854 when Georgina was only 9 months old. He was appointed Master of Ardtornish School on 19 Jan 1857. This school had been made possible by a government grant in March 1847 in the Modbury district about 6 miles north east of Adelaide. The Presbyterian Church donated 20 pounds. Official returns state that the school conducted by Charles Kerr was "a very useful school conducted by an energetic master in a good and well furnished building.

Charles wife, Janet, joined him in 1856. With her 5 children she left Liverpool by the "Phoenix" 907 tons, Captain William Moppett on 20 Oct 1855 bound for Sydney. Page 2 of the passenger list has No. 16 Jane Kerr, aged 35 ‎(error for Janet)‎, George Kerr. 11 - Eliza ‎(Elizabeth 9 - Archie. 5 - Mary 4 and Georgina aged 1 year. The latter was aged 2. The "Phoenix" reached Melbourne on her way to Sydney on 19 Jan 1856 and from there Janet conducted her brood aboard the "White Swan" Captain Lamond and reached Port Adelaide on 27 Jan 1856. Notice in the Adelaide "Observer" of 2 Feb 1856.

How many years the family were at Ardtornish has not been ascertained but Charles was still a school teacher "of Waterloo" in 1880 by the Directory but late of Waterloo in 1890.‎
