After the draft was put into operation, Abraham/Abram R. was drafted in September 1864 into the Civil War. Along with a group of draftees, he assembled at the Athenian Theater in Wheeling. He served with the Union forces until the close of the conflict.
Abraham lived in St. Marys where he owned the Exchange Hotel. He had 6 or 7 children.
Hardesty's History of West Virginia: ABRAHAM RUTTENCUTTER--son of Daniel and Mary Ruttencutter, is a resident of St. Mary's, Washington district, Pleasants County, West Virginia, where he is well known as proprietor of the Exchange Hotel, and as a careful and accommodating drayman. He will be glad to meet the traveling public at his place, and will make it as pleasant as possible for all who favor him with their patronage. He also has good stabling in connection with his house. Mr. Ruttencutter married in thie State and county, April 5, 1860, Christiana Watson, who was born in Ritchie county in 1842, on the 11th of June. They have six living children at home with them, and have lost one infant daughter. The children are as follows.....
