The Kinkaku-ji Zen Buddhist Temple (or Temple of the Golden Pavilion) dates back to the Muromachi era, ie, early 15 century. It has been ravaged by war, fire and time but has been rebuilt and restored several times. The top two levels are coated in gold-leaf and on its pinnacle is a golden phoenix.
The surrounding garden is also representative of the Muromachi era.
